Multimodal AI in Biomedicine

Aim & Scope

Why Attend?

This intensive one-week professional-level summer school will explore the transformative role of Multimodal AI in Biomedicine, examining how integrated machine learning architectures approach biomedical problems with a computational lens. The course features a series of extended lectures focused on developing AI algorithms, datasets, and interfaces that cut across computer vision, natural language processing, and structured health data, combined with an intensive workshop on navigating and integrating these disparate data modalities. Participants will learn practical skills for the use of modern computational frameworks and cutting-edge tools in a format that encourages collaborative engagement and offers ample time for follow-up conversation and networking. Approaches that emphasize algorithmic robustness, data interoperability, and the ethical implications of AI-driven clinical insights will be considered. The course setting will provide an ideal atmosphere of collegiality for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty to share knowledge and insights in this rapidly expanding and vital area of the computational life sciences.

Travel and accommodation

The conference room (at Hotel Carasco, Porto delle Genti, Lipari) is air-conditioned and equipped with all necessary conference materials. In addition, special areas are reserved for students for the afternoon coursework and study. The island of Lipari can be easily reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Milazzo, Palermo, Naples, Messina, and Reggio Calabria (a 50-minute ride from Milazzo).

Participant Categories

1. Students

This track is designed for those who require ECTS credits for a Ph.D. program.

  • Coursework: Includes 24 hours of instruction and mandatory afternoon sessions.

  • Assessment: Grades are assigned via the ECTS scale based on a two-part final exam:

    • Presentation: A talk on your research (held during the course).

    • Written Test: Conducted on the final day.

  • Credits: ECTS credits are awarded upon passing both components.

2. Auditors

This track is for participants who wish to attend the sessions but do not want to take the exam or earn academic credit.

Participants can switch track at any time.

Talks & Awards

All students must submit a 1-page abstract of their research by July 03, 2026. From these submissions, students will be selected for:
